A heads up from AO3 News: "We recently received reports about one or more Tumblr accounts posing as "AO3 consultants" and contacting other users about their works on the Archive. In those messages, users are asked to take down their works "due to reports of abuse" or else have their works deleted by AO3 admins.
These messages are in no way sanctioned by the AO3 Policy & Abuse committee, who will never contact users via social media. All messages you receive from our Support and Abuse teams will be signed by the volunteer contacting you, and will reference specific abuse reports, requests for technical support, or other matters pertaining to your account."
"Unless it violates some other policy, we will not remove Content for offensiveness, no matter how awful, repugnant, or badly spelled we may personally find that content to be."
Edit: like the staff said, they will give you a shot to clean up your fic if it breaks policy.
I was reading through the comments on the AO3 post and a lot of these people are doing this due to AO3's policy of permitting fics featuring underage sex. These people have been encouraging people to report AO3 to the FBI for 'promoting sexual abuse of minors' and 'child pornography'. Since they've now seen that AO3 won't bend to their demands as FFN did (and the FBI obviously doesn't care about their complaints), they decided to be sneaky. If they can't get AO3 to take down the fics and they themselves can't physically remove then, then tricking the authors into taking the fics down is their last resort. The thinking behind it is clever - if only the entire thing weren't so unbelievably stupid and a waste of time.
(and please don't respond to this comment by getting into a discussion over whether or not it's right for AO3 to allow fics with underage sex. We've had that discussion on this sub a number of times and it never goes anywhere good. I just wanted to provide clarification, since a lot of people think this is purely the work of trolls, and it's not)
Pedophilia specifically refers to a sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. Hebephilia is the term for sexual attraction to pubescent children (typically aged 11-14) and Ephebophila is sexual attraction to post-pubescent adolescents (generally age 15-19).
In a lot of states and countries, the age of consent is younger than 18. Plus, it just makes sense for the rules to make a distinction between a fic with a 17- and 20-year old in a relationship and a fic with a 10- and 20-year old in a relationship.
It's very complicated. Most people automatically think 'underage' only refers to a child under ten being involved, but then there are the people who realize that technically, a 15 year old and an 16 year old having sex is also considered 'underage'. While nobody on this sub condones pedophilia in any way, shape or form, many people write for high school fandoms where underage characters are having relationships with people who are over 18 (and some of these relationships are even canon), and nobody should be confusing that with pedophilia (but some people do).
Then there are the individuals who write fics that feature child sexual abuse, but there's no evil intentions behind it (the sexual abuse is simply a plot point). A lot of people think that underage-anything should be banned because there are pedophiles in many fandoms and they do use their fics as a way of drawing in young fans who they want to take advantage of. But then there are the folks who believe that censoring one thing will lead to censoring a lot of other things (which we've seen happen many times before) and the responsibility of staying safe online rests with the reader, not with the writer. So basically, it's a very, very complicated issue that has many angles.
Lemme guess - fandom anti's who are doing this to patrol "inappropriate shipping" because they have nothing better to do with their time than sip their low fat lattes and be jealous that they can't produce content at all?
Right! Like, I don’t ship Shiro and Pidge, but I have a friend who does (and has his own personal age headcanons) I don’t like it but I don’t give him a shit for it. People just need to mind their own damn business.
Exactly. Than again anti's just aren't happy unless it's their own favorite thing. (BH6 anti's are obsessed with crossover ships that ain't ever gonna happen and reason anyone who headcanons Tadashi as still alive must be pedophiles.. Yeah that was fun being told that as a TadaHoney shipper.)
On FFN they could at least point to an actual violation of the rules most of the time. But since AO3 doesn't have the same rules, they have to pretend to be "consultants."
Tony Soprano was, on paper, a "waste management consultant." But most of his consulting advice was "do what I say or I'll make your life hell." These consultants seem to follow the Soprano model.
About a dozen FFN users who review on stories that clearly (for the most part) break rules in various fandoms. 2nd person, lists as fics, chat/script format and lyrics in fics are usually the ones that are commented on the most. They tend to stick to the fandoms they write or read for but everything is on the table. Also, they have a tipline thread for "non members" to report fics.
Why on the earth do they care so much about what people post? That's a lot of time spent policing the content of others when you can spend that time reading good fanfic.
That's a lot of time spent policing the content of others when you can spend that time reading good fanfic.
I'm willing to bet when they look for fics for read on the updated page, there's a lot of low hanging fruit. They don't go over the entire website in their free time, but a member who writes & reads for Zootopia will report mostly Zootopia fics. That's why there's the tipline. Can't explain why they care so much though; just the way it is.
Why on the earth do they care so much about what people post?
1 - because they unlike apparently 80-ish % of FF.N's users acknowledge that they do not own the site, and are obligated to follow its rules.
2 - because FF.N doesn't have a lot of money to deal with legal affairs. If authors like Anne Rice who oppose fanfic of their material noticed anything amiss, wholesale closing the site would be the easier option.
Close, but no cigar. I'm saying that FF.N users are obligated to follow FF.N rules, which should really be self-evident but apparently isn't, infractions of which are perfectly kosher for anyone to highlight.
they are obliged to run around criticizing people
Citation needed, because I hear this "CU members are the spawn of Satan" accusation constantly whenever discussions of them come up, and do you know what I actually find when I skim reviews from them? Hint, it's not a profanity-laden series of personal attacks where "fuck" is every third word and used in every form that a noun and a verb can take according to modern english grammar.
It's just "here is x rule being violated, here is x way to fix it, here is x consequence of it not being fixed". For evidence, here:
No. It's like any other writing style, you can have good or bad script!fics... and it's also a matter of personal taste. I don't like reading most fics with OCs in them, but there are other people who hardly read fics that don't contain them. It's all preference.
Sounds a lot like that FF.net group from Tumble years back that mass reported stories that even slightly violated the term/rating system. Said they were making fanfiction a better structured system or whatever. They cyber bullied annewhynn (pen name) off the website because of her super popular Halo x Mass Effect crossover.
The day tumblr decides to stop making april fools jokes every year, attempts to relate with the younger generations, and when they decide to crack down on the rampant amount of porn bots + nazi blogs on the site without telling users to "report and block those accounts." So....in short: never.
You missed the point. The fact is is that there are people on tumblr pretending to be apart of an organization and essentially blackmailing users on the site. "If you don't do what I say then blah blah is going to happen." That's the basic definition of blackmail, not to mention that tumblr has a repeated history of failing to abide by the own rules it lists out in it's TOS. Something that I jokingly mentioned as a reason tumblr will never give a flying crap about actually dishing out punishment or stopping people who are masquerading as those who volunteer or are connected to Ao3.
If tumblr can't even fix the problems I mentioned (which by me saying "cracking down" doesn't equate to policing content, dude. People are free to post their tiddie pics and whatever vitrol comes out of their mouth so they can expose their idiocy to the world, but it's another thing when those porn bots are following minors, reblogging minors pics, or even posting links to malware and nsfw content on posts that are about things as simple as "I made a breakfast burrito.") then they have no hope or outright desire to deal with a problem that equates to blackmail and extortion. Also I don't get why you're jumping to conclusions about some random person on the internet. Yea, me saying tumblr has problems and should do better at their job equals me ranting about how I want everything censored like the Watergate scandal or that I'm as similar to people in this debacle making false claims....okay, dude.
No. I didn't miss the point. In fact, you did. I wasn't calling them out saying people should be allowed to harass people anonymously, I was calling them out on specifically saying:
porn bots + nazi blogs
First, as always, I do NOT condone nazis in any, way, shape, or form, but coming from a fandom where one of the other MOST POPULAR characters that is an actual nazi and people, on ao3, write so much repugnant and nasty murder/rape/sex fic about him.
What even is your point? Freedom of personal expression doesn't equal me saying that tumblr has a shit ton of problems that they will never fix, are never going to fix because these problems have been rampant for years with everyone pointing them out only for tumblr to act like that dad that makes really dumb jokes instead of addressing the problem. In no way, shape or form am I ever saying that people should be censored for the content they wish to create. You want to make a fan film about a kung fu cop traveling back in time to kill Hitler? Cool, do you. You want to create a story where your character bangs a nazi, a dog, barney? Cool, you do you, I can raise my eyebrows at such things, but I'm not going to say that X type of content should be banned, removed, deleted, whatever.
But I draw the line at people making social media accounts directly targeting people because of their culture or ethnicity, harrassing users, making death threats, etc. Things that go against any site's TOS. That's what I'm talking about not the censoring of an individual's right to create expressive content. Creating content and being an asshat are two wildly different things and if it's such an inflammatory statement for me to say "yea tumblr has problems that it routinely ignores so they're not going to give two shits about this a03 situation, since they refuse to deal with the porn bots and nazi blogs." Then let it be such an inflammatory statement that I may use the fire for my own pyre.
The difference is that while Naziism is an awful thing, it's a thing some people genuinely believe. And legal porn that doesn't otherwise violate the terms of service may be annoying and gross, but it can be filtered (and if a porn account tries to get around the filter, they're violating the ToS). The "consultants," on the other hand, know they have no affiliation with the AO3 admins, and they're actively trying to mislead people into doing something they wouldn't otherwise do, and that they don't have to do.
That’s why (in the US) it's not a crime to say "I hate Jews," or "come look at these sexy ladies," provided the sexy ladies are consenting adults and their establishment otherwise complies with the law. But it is a crime to say "I'm from the IRS, so give me your money or go to jail." And it's still a crime, even if the person honestly believes that for one reason or another they're justified in defrauding the victim, and can back that up with a solid moral argument.
And there was just another big one in Gorillaz fandom, where a group of antis tried to push a woman to suicide. Plus, one of these "antis" turned out to have raped several people. And that isn't even going into the harassment from Nazis and TERFs, or the rampant false callout posts people make because they're jealous or angry at an ex with such crimes as "XYZ is ableist" (link to where they said dumb once in a tweet) and constant doxxing. At this rate "policing content" means keeping these assholes from forcing more people into psych wards or suicide/suicide attempts.
Hoping tumblr will step in to the extreme bullying on the site =/= getting in the way of freedom or whatever. Freedom of Speech doesn't equal freedom to harass.
Nazi and porn blogs are harassment, not content. The porn blogs they're referring to aren't just like a dude posting titties and cat pics. They're full of viruses, and often there has to be a PSA going around about how block this and this one. They also often follow/interact with people to try and spread said viruses--including minors.
Nothing in this thread is about ~censoring content~ or whatever.
Also AO3 would take down these things too, because stalking and harassing people (be it hate fueled or not), trying to spread viruses and doxxing someone are harassment and not freedom of content creation.
Maybe you don't have a tumblr or whatever, so you don't understand how annoying it is to try and get them to moderate anything or actually hold up their own TOS. There's people openly doxxing despite it being a breech of TOS. Tumblr just doesn't care.
And actually, yeah. Reddit taking down subreddits because of a few vocal minorities complaining about them or because of a few bad apples is absolutely the same thing and my point exactly.
If Ao3 played by those rules, you'd just have to complain about a fic enough, or complain that it has violence in it, or is inciting violence (any and all rape fic, etc), to get it removed. People put some damn shocking fics up, just sayin'.
Lol, this fic seems relevant. I'm not saying AO3 should actually do that as a prank, but it would sure reveal the flaw in some people's mindsets of "this shouldn't be acceptable so I'm reporting it."
Yup. I mean, there's tons of stuff that I find distasteful too, but the moment that you label just one thing unacceptable, then you open the door for the Puritans to come after you next.
Censorship is a dangerous game to play, especially in fanfic, because people will literally get offended at anything and everything. And as far as the hyper nasty/offensive things, like rape/murder/torture, sometimes people write that stuff in order to cope.
It's dangerous not to call out when people begin to conflate needing to clamp down on bullying/harrassing with the desire to police content simply because they disagree with it. The two are very separate things and it is a sneaky rhetorical sleight of hand to merge the two, so that people start seeing them in the same light.
To say that this specific content has viruses is an excuse. A virus can exist can exist on any page.
I literally had to delete my story because of some Tumblr users threatening to report users to the FBI and two users said "STOP WRITING CP!!!!" at my story when they were underage at the minimum of 16. I'm really sad now because I loved writing that story. Fuck Tumblr :(
This is pretty late after you’ve posted, but as long as your fix is about fictional characters, they can’t do anything about it. Even if the tumblr users contact the FBI, they can’t do anything about it either.
In this case, I’d highly recommend posting on Ao3 instead of tumblr because Ao3’s TOS is built to protect authors from things like this. Good luck!

God, that is such an awesome statement, massive points to AO3 for backbone. :)
Polar opposite of fanfiction.net's rules haha
This triggers Critics United.
Joke's on them
I don't have a tumblr.
Checkmate.
Why would people even do this? To troll? To take policing content into their own hands? To remove authors more popular than themselves?
Number 2 I'm guessing.
Or all three. I really hope they don't succeed (and am getting angry just by the thought of the chance.)
Yes, they are number 2.

Hah, apparently I'm into child porn now. (A very clear /S tag just in case)
Take a seat
This is outrageous! This is unfair!
Lol different take a seat
Well I tried hahaha
Lol its reddit, you're prolly right roughly 80%of the time
So what’s this sub’s stance on underagey stuff? Just curious.
Depending on the type of fic: link and warn for it or not at all.
There’s a difference between Pedophilia and underage? Well, TIL.
Don't you think there's a slight difference between a 17-year-old and a 7-year-old?
Pedophilia specifically refers to a sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. Hebephilia is the term for sexual attraction to pubescent children (typically aged 11-14) and Ephebophila is sexual attraction to post-pubescent adolescents (generally age 15-19).

It’s varied. There’s a sidebar outlining the policy on fics, and if you go through past posts there is plenty of reading on the topic.
Lemme guess - fandom anti's who are doing this to patrol "inappropriate shipping" because they have nothing better to do with their time than sip their low fat lattes and be jealous that they can't produce content at all?
cough Voltron cough
No lie, I browsed a tumblr blog and it showed screenshots of Voltron anti's conspiring THIS exact thing.
It's them.
Ikr. I love voltron but all of the antis are ruining everything for everyone. Just let a ship be a ship. If you don’t like it? Tough cookies.
Bingo. The Big Hero 6 fandom has a handful of Anti's who are still trying to claim the Hidashi shippers are sin.
No one listens anymore. I don't like Hidashi. But you won't see me doxxing someone over it.
Right! Like, I don’t ship Shiro and Pidge, but I have a friend who does (and has his own personal age headcanons) I don’t like it but I don’t give him a shit for it. People just need to mind their own damn business.

Gotta love the weird assholes on the internet 🙃
Seriously.
It's almost like ruining Fanfiction.net wasn't enough for Critics United.
What's Critics United?
About a dozen FFN users who review on stories that clearly (for the most part) break rules in various fandoms. 2nd person, lists as fics, chat/script format and lyrics in fics are usually the ones that are commented on the most. Can't explain why they care so much though; just the way it is.
You're forgetting the part where they harass and troll users out of sheer spite rather than for an actual flaw in their story.
They probably view it as something like vollunteering their time to be moderators for the site.
1 - because they unlike apparently 80-ish % of FF.N's users acknowledge that they do not own the site, and are obligated to follow its rules.

Well they just sound like a ray of sunshine.
Is it bad that I don't mind (and never have) script format?
No. It's like any other writing style, you can have good or bad script!fics... and it's also a matter of personal taste. I don't like reading most fics with OCs in them, but there are other people who hardly read fics that don't contain them. It's all preference.

So ridiculous, lmao. But with Tumblr I am not even surprised.
Seems like the people reporting others and making these "consultant" accounts don't have a life...😕
When will tumblr crack down on this nonsense?
The day tumblr decides to stop making april fools jokes every year, attempts to relate with the younger generations, and when they decide to crack down on the rampant amount of porn bots + nazi blogs on the site without telling users to "report and block those accounts." So....in short: never.
They try to relate to anyone other than the younger generations ?
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Odd demographic presentation, even if it is weighting internet average more than population.
They've tried before, but those results were usually mind boggling and just down right odd.
Wait wait wait ... You want tumblr to start policing content, when this entire thread is about Ao3's admirable freedom of expression policy???
Let me guess ... "I only want content I don't like policed." ? ... just like the people making the false claims ... just sayin'

Yeah, nah. Tumblr has almost killed some people due to extreme bullying and harassment. Like Zamii http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/zamii070-harassment-controversy

Good luck!
Ugh.
